A good, cheap cuppa joe
In the Flat White category (we are, after all, the land of the flat white crowd), Fidel’s came in first at $3.50, Moore Wilson’s café charges $3.60 or just $3.30 for gold customers and Mojo came in third at $3.90 (or $3.50 with a loyalty card). Loyalty cards bring Emporio and Memphis Belle’s charge down to $3.60, and you don’t even need a card at Memphis Belle – where the staff charmingly say, “If we know your face, and you mention it, you’ve got the discount”.
For those who’d rather a Long Black, Fidel’s is still top dog at $3, tied with People’s Coffee, but you can save a further 10cents at Memphis Belle if you’re a regular.
Hot Chocolates vary in size and make-up, which may explain the big price differences, but the cheapest is to be found at Moore Wilson’s.
Memphis Belle and People’s Coffee take out the Hot lemon, honey and ginger category with $3 cups.
When it comes to Fair Trade, you can’t go wrong with People’s Coffee – where every drink can be ordered without worry, even a hot chocolate. Deluxe and Maranui are all Fair Trade, and stressed that, “we use organic milk too”. Astoria espresso is also Fair Trade. Some café’s say they use “real”, “ethical” or “direct” trade.
Mojo’s 90cent Soy Charge is a bit ridiculous, and most charge a flat 50cents – except Plum who don’t charge for soy at all. Plum also proudly announced that they’re changing to Fair Trade beans from August 26.
What do you think? Do you know a café that serves great coffee for cheaper? Are you happy to pay extra for Fair Trade beans, soymilk and takeaway cups? If prices continue to rise, will you pay $5 for a flat white?
