A terrific night
Garth WilshereDame Malvina Major Foundation 21st Anniversary Concert, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra,
Soloist – Dame Malvina Major and guests,
Conductor – Wyn Davies,
Michael Fowler Centre, June 30,

THIS concert showcased the benefits of the support and mentoring provided by grants from the Dame Melvina Foundation.
It was an intelligent repertoire mix and a stroke of acumen to open with the beautifully meditative Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams, as it was able to use all the young singers and outstanding violinist Ben Morrison with the orchestra.
The orchestra clearly relished the opportunity to play this operatic repertoire under an experienced conductor.
Teddy Tahu Rhodes’s international experience showed in some exhilarating Mozart arias, and in ensembles. And the gleam in Aivale Cole’s voice was nowhere more apparent than in Richard Strauss, Zueignung.
Morrison’s solo piece with the orchestra the Saint-Saëns Havanaise showed his precision and technique. The extended excerpt from Verdi’s Don Carlos brought drama and passion from the four singers.
From the lighter-voiced singers the genius of Mozart again in excerpts from his divine Cosi fan tutte. Sweet Gounod, in Darren Pene Patti’s Salut, demure… from Faust.
The Children’s Prayer from Hansel and Gretel was sensitively sung by Carleen Ebbs and Bianca Andrew.
The artistry of Dame Malvina herself was on display show in Verdi’s Merce, dilette amiche from Sicilian Vespers.
The rousingly, celebratory Die Fledermaus excerpt was a suitably frothy ending to a terrific night of music-making.
