Aiming for zero
Friday is World AIDS day and as the HIV epidemic has never been worse in this country there’s no time for complacency says Sean Kelly of Wellington’s Awhina Centre. With the global theme of Getting to Zero the day focuses on three messages; zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS related deaths, and zero discrimination.
“These international messages also reflect issues that are at the forefront of New Zealand’s HIV epidemic,” Kelly says. “These are HIV prevention initiatives, access to essential treatment and equality for people living with HIV.”
In Wellington, as for the rest of New Zealand, the World Aids Day street collection is the cornerstone of a variety of events being held to mark the day. Volunteer street collectors will exchange red ribbons, the international sign of solidarity with people living with HIV, for donations. A pub run is also planned for the evening with teams of collectors covering the pubs from Lambton Quay to Courtenay Place, exchanging donations for red ribbons and condoms.
Kelly says World Aids Day is also about raising awareness and an afternoon of activities will take place in Midland Park from midday. As well as entertainment, information and condoms will be distributed to the public, and in a first, a portable eftpos machine will be available for making donations.
A World AIDS Day fundraiser is also planned for December 4 with a bowling party at The Lanes Bowling Lounge on Wakefield Street.
Kelly says the Awhina Centre is still looking for collectors for Friday’s street appeal. To help contact the centre on 381-6640.
Proceeds raised will be shared between the Wellness Fund and the NZ Aids Foundation’s health services.
