Another week of legal highs
Owner of Cosmic, Mark Carswell says his company has seen a big increase in sales as people stock up before any ban takes effect. Retailers have discounted prices to move stock.
“People are aware of the upcoming changes and they’re buying in bulk,” Carswell says. “The law will target retailers and it seems crazy that people can still possess and use it but we can’t sell it.”
Carswell says retailers have received no update from government on when a ban was to take effect. Aspokesperson for Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne says the legislation banning the sale of synthetic cannabinoids would be in force by the end of next week.
The spokesperson said the amendments to The Misuse of Drugs Act had received Royal assent and were to be gazetted before the end of this week. The new law would not come into effect until seven days after the amendments were gazetted.
Carswell believes in time the government will adopt a “more sensible approach” to the synthetic cannabinoid issue. A meeting between industry representatives and the Ministry of Health was still planned in the next few weeks.
“That the Ministry is still prepared to meet with us is a good sign. We hope discussions will show that legal highs are safe and give us clarity on how to retail the stuff safely.”
