Blazing a path to a smart green capital
Last week was an important week for Wellington City.
In council’s main committee, the Toward 2040 strategy was agreed, developing the Capital as smart green Wellington: a city that is connected, people-centred, ecologically-sustainable and dynamic. A place where talent wants to live.
Council’s digital strategy also passed, aiming to make Wellington a world leader in digital creativity. This is a great city to live in, and our people can increasingly work globally using Wellington as a base.
City icons Sir Ngatata Love and Sir Paul Callaghan said the strategies – which consider how today’s decisions impact the future – are brilliant. Having their buy-in is an endorsement; having your buy-in is essential.
On Wednesday we presented the BIG: Business Innovation Growth expo. Many of Wellington’s exciting businesses went to Parliament to showcase the innovation driving the Wellington economy, especially high-value exports – from creative museum technology, humane pest control, intelligent clothing; a fascinating range of products as well as world leading IT in cloud technology and computer modelling
The warmth of Wellingtonians has impressed many foreign visitors here for RWC 2011, who’ll be telling their friends and families back home all about us.
These moments took stock of the best of Wellington – our culture, our economy, our people – and set a course for the city’s future.
So what can you do? Be aware, informed and engaged. Embrace new technologies and ways of doing things. Catch a train to a part of Wellington you’re unfamiliar with, then walk back home. Build your business here. Be a Wellington ambassador.
