Boxed environment
Imaginary Geographies looks at interpretations of the environment from four different artists from around the world – New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and Korea.
Curator Claudia Arozqueta says she hopes the exhibition “will inject a little curiosity into people walking past the light boxes on Courtenay Place.
I had been thinking about this exhibition for months, and I realised that a lot of artists had been doing work about the environment and geography. It’s all about how the artist thinks about geography in different spaces.”
The artists will portray how they see the environment, using both reality and their imagination.
Several boxes have been left empty for members of the public and other artists.
“We’re asking other artists to check out the exhibition while it’s on – they can then submit their own ideas on our website. It’s a good time for them to showcase their art, and they will be sharing the stage with some well established artists already,” says Arozqueta.
As well as photography, the exhibition will also showcase written work about the environment.
Wellington poet Lucy Orbell has written a poem especially for the show, which will be displayed on benches around the exhibition.
The exhibition runs until April 2012. The artworks selected for the empty boxes will be showcased from February.
