Campaign for food banks
A campaign to support local food banks, themselves feeling the squeeze as more struggle to feed their families. Benn Crawford, organiser of the Wellington500 Campaign, says the goal is to encourage the donation of 500 food parcels to Wellington food banks by December 31.
“I was stirred by the continuing hardship felt by many in our battered economy,” Crawford says. “I wanted to start a small campaign to support our local food banks in the hope that Wellingtonians might support their neighbours as the going gets tough.”
Wellington500 has suggested the foods each parcel should contain, the highest demand foods for a food bank including breakfast cereal, tinned fish, baked beans and spaghetti, and pasta and rice. Details are available on http://wellington500.info.
“Each food parcel costs around $10-$15 depending on the food brands chosen and which supermarket you buy from. One parcel helps prevent a person from going hungry and costs less than a movie at the cinema,” Crawford says.
Michelle Brannie, chief executive of Wellington City Mission, is welcoming the Wellington500 campaign.
“There has definitely been an increase in people using our foodbank and we appreciate any help we can get,” Brannie says. “We’ll make sure the parcels get to the people who need them the most.”
To donate a parcel take it to Level 1 of the Student Union Building, at Massey University’s Wellington campus, every Sunday night from 5pm, or alternatively directly to the Wellington City Mission or to the Downtown Community Ministry.
