Chips keeps Harry warm
The Endurance was trapped in the ice for a year, sparking Shackleton’s epic journey in a small boat, which led to the survival of all 29 crew.
McNish was one of those survivors and is now buried in Karori cemetery. In 2009, the New Zealand Antarctic Society commissioned a brass statue of Mrs Chippy for his grave. The ‘grave with the cat’ has become one of the most visited and asked about sites in the cemetery.
The NZAS has now commissioned an interpretation panel about McNish and Mrs Chippy, to be installed next to Harry McNish’s grave and unveiled on Saturday.
Intepretation panel unveiling, Harry McNish’s grave, Karori cemetery, 3pm, November 5.
