Ciao to favourite trattoria
“Without the incredible passion and skill of my wife Maria Pia I wouldn’t be here talking to you,” he says.
Giuseppe Malaponti, an old friend of Klein’s, has bought the restaurant. Malaponti has spent many of his 16 years in Wellington working in hospitality, and has “flirted with the idea” of opening a restaurant for the past five.
The establishment, to be called MariLuca Ristoro, will offer inter-regional Italian cuisine made with both local and imported produce, and not straying too far from traditional Italian recipes.
Giuseppe: “I don’t think you can reinvent cooking, you can only promote it.”
A real family business; it’s named for Giuseppe and wife Isabela’s children Marina and Gianluca. ‘Ristoro’ has many meanings – all of them good.
“It is a haven, an oasis… a place where you freshen up and recharge.”
Maria Pia’s Trattoria closes July 30, MariLuca Ristoro opens August 15.
