Climbing the pie charts
“We’ve had to find each other’s strengths and work with them… We’re quite patient and trusting of each other’s work,” says Whakamoe.
“It’s important to keep it natural, too,” adds Prebble, “You’ve just got to play what you hear and then be open to a certain amount of guidance to enhance those ideas.”
The band formed in May last year, and the bluesy, rocky, swampy culmination of a year’s work will be released on their debut album Big Nudge Pie next week. It was mostly recorded as if live onstage – with the boys playing together in the same room, at Ryan’s brother Lee “The Doctor” Prebble’s Surgery, in Newtown.
“You come out warts and all recording like that, but it’s an awesome way to do it because you focus on playing music, rather than just playing your instrument in a song,” says Whakamoe.
The Nudge has the support of some of our finest – just four months after their first gig they supported The Black Seeds on a national tour, they’re booked in to play Coromandel Gold music festival this summer (and undoubtedly more festival dates will follow), and Little Bushman’s Warren Maxwell will open for them at the album release.
How much of a band’s success is in ‘who you know’?
“It’s completely who you know. Life’s not about ‘coming up with the goods’, it’s about coming up with the whanau… about tautoko – or helping each other out,” says Whakamoe.
Coyle: “They trust us to step up, and because the band’s working we’ve held our own and not disappointed them.”
Watch this space – like a hot pie on an empty stomach, the Nudge is on its way to becoming one of our best-loved staples.
The Nudge, San Francisco Bathhouse, August 5.
