Clothes for bros
“I grew up a tomboy. When I went shopping with my brother I was always more interested in picking out clothes and outfits for him than for myself,” explains Beck, who played a lot of competitive basketball while at school – a girls’ school, Karori’s Samuel Marsden Collegiate.
Beck stayed at Samuel Marsden until sixth form, then flew to Minnesota, America, to finish her final year on exchange at a co-ed high school where she played in two basketball leagues.
She also spent time with the boys as was familiar, “I was outside all the time, sledding in the snow in winter and cliff-jumping in summer.”
On her return to Wellington at the end of 2009 Beck considered a design degree but decided she prefers “a more hands-on rather than digital approach to art”. Instead she began media and marketing at Victoria University to help set up ‘Less Successful Sibling’. She’s now in her second year at university and she began selling her clothes online in August.
“I always talked about combining my art with my love of dressing guys,” Beck explains.
When it comes to clothes for bros, she sounds like she knows what she’s talking about.
“Every guy needs shirts and singlets for both summer and winter,” she explains, “It’s good to have a mix of plain tees and those with real designs on them with more detail than just plain brand names.”
Though she says her brothers will always come first, Beck’s branching out. The first two girls’ designs will be launched with her new summer range
