Cricket ticking along nicely
“We’re heading into a great season of cricket, with seniors beginning October 22 and juniors on October 29,” says Dickinson.
Registration day last Saturday meant most clubs had a good turn out, he says, and giving kids a taste of cricket at skills awareness lessons has resulted in 12,000 of them signing up in the past six weeks.
There’ve been some changes in the local cricket scene, which features a mix of grades.
“We’re offering a Sunday 20/20 grade for older kids, for those who are doing other sports on Saturdays. At college level there’s also going to be 20/20 grades for social cricketers,” says Dickinson.
Work is underway on the Karori grounds and Karori Park will host its first first-class game when Wellington plays Central Districts mid March.
The New Zealand Black Caps head off to play Zimbabwe at the end of October – “We’ll win,” says Dickinson – and then to play Australia in what will be a tougher game.
Wellington Cricket is “not too worried” about the proposed flyover for the Basin Reserve, and Dickinson says he’s confident the Council will make a decent decision for the city.
“We’re just focusing on the cricket.”
