Dancing the new year
But that’s what Newtown local Elaine Lethbridge, who is now retired is looking forward to at New Years Eve as she participates for the third time, in the 55th annual Scottish Dance Summer School Camp.
The camp starts in the last week of December and goes through to the first week of January, the dancers will celebrate the new year with a Hogmanay – and lots of traditional Scottish dancing and singing.
Lethbridge is one of 200 dancers planning to attend the camp. She is looking forward to the camp, adding that “ it’s going to be quite strenuous – dancing all day every day for some of us, with a few breaks in between for socialising.”
Everyone who has registered has to attend the morning classes, but the afternoon classes are optional.
Lethbridge now spends her week focusing on Scottish dance – she teaches juniors on Monday in Island Bay, and participates in adult classes twice a week.
“I’ve been dancing since I was a very young girl – my mother got me into it, and I have been doing it for the last 30 years or so,” she says. “ My brother and sister did it for a while when they were young, but I am the only one who kept at it.”
The event will also attract some international visitors, travelling from as far as Canada.
