Debaters take on the world
The top two debating teams have just returned from the World Debating Championships this month in the Philippines where the Victoria University A team were placed 15th equal, (out of 400 teams from 70 countries).
While most of us may think this to be a great success, debater Sebastian Templeton says
“We were expecting to do better. We had done really well in previous competitions.”
He says there were some cultural differences between how New Zealanders debate and many of the other countries.
“I think because New Zealand is so much more isolated we had a broader outlook on some of the issues, where as some of the other countries were much more formal because some of the issues were more personal to them.”
The debates covered free labour, slavery and nationalism.
In December Templeton and fellow debater Richard D’ath took out top honour awards at the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia, beating Oxford, Cambridge and Ateneo de Manila universities in the final.
