Dirty riders
They are the Women of Dirt, a six hour mountain bike event for women taking place at the Makara mountain bike park in Karori on Saturday. Organised by the Revolve Cycling Club, Women of Dirt is a chance for women to have fun in the mud, says founder Marjolein Ros.
“The event is all about playing in the dirt,” Ros says. “We all get dressed up in costumes and race around the tracks, basically having a huge celebration of women on bikes.”
Ros says the event is designed for women of all levels of fitness and experience and takes place on the lower easily accessible trails in the park.
“We have a dirty girls category for teams of four riders as well as a solo category. The riders who do the most laps in the six hours will be the winners.”
Spectators are also welcome and there will be food stands, music and entertainment. And once the mud’s been washed off the day will end with a tea-party and a bake off of home baked goodies.
Ros started Revolve with friend Ash Burgess just over two years ago.
“We just wanted to get more women into bike riding and have a fun social time as well. I came to New Zealand four years ago from Holland, where of course there are no mountains. Once here though mountain biking became my passion.”
With now some 130 members aged between 14 and 65, Revolve caters for all ages and abilities. Weekly rides are held for both road and mountain bikers, as well the occasional cycle tour to the Wairarapa, seminars and skills courses.
