Energetic jazz
Garth WilshereTHIS was an exciting concert with a big contingent of school age players in the audience who had participated earlier in school jazz band performances so there was a great sense of expectation.
The New Zealand School of Music Big Band comprising talented musicians opened with a very accomplished set, with solos from several of the band, all of which I enjoyed but vocalist Hannah Clink with her own distinctive and individual style was particularly impressive.
Here amongst the Jazz students were some normally classical instrumental students and a classical soprano.A very diverse and impressive range.
The boundless energy and enthusiasm of director Rodger Fox kept everything in place and moving along.
The young Kapiti College and NZSM Young Musician saxophone student who won the improvisation competition, Tyaan Singh, played with impressive style, poise and aplomb.
Fox’s Wellington Jazz Orchestra, comprising the cream of Wellington’s jazz instrumentalists followed, again with plenty of interest, imagination and variety in the arrangements and selections. They were joined after interval by the visiting international players, saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trumpeter, Alex Sipiagi and drummer Steve Houghton who showed their quality and class which together with the fine local band members and Fox himself on trombone on occasion made for an exhilarating night of great music-making.
