Fin on the water
The dolphin was seen at Mahanga Bay on Monday and reported to the Department of Conservation by a member of the public who said the dolphin had spent about five minutes swimming in and around their boat.
The first live record of a Hector’s dolphin in Wellington harbour was in January 2009 and several sightings of the dolphin were made that summer. Monday’s sighting was the first since then.
Hector’s dolphins are found only in New Zealand and number just under 8,000.
