Finale
Garth WilshereFOR their final concert of the year the WYO were joined by the Pelorus Trust Wellington Brass Band who opened the concert with a brass band favourite, an arrangement of Verdi’s overture to The Force of Destiny. Arrayed front of stage under their conductor David Bremner theirs was a rousing performance.
To start in “cold” with the musically difficult Ravel Piano Concert in G major was tough on the youth orchestra players. The performance suffered a little because of this and probably from insufficient rehearsal time but they played well. It is a sophisticated piece which ideally needs a musically experienced soloist, but young Asaph Verner captured the notes and spirit of this jazzy and exciting piece.
Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnole is full of light and shade and moody tonal colour which they conveyed. What was missing was shaping of phrases by conductor Gregory Squire to impart real character.
The Pelorus Brass were patient sitting up behind strings and winds for their splendidly big moments in Respighi’s Pines of Rome, a sprawling, exciting, colourful “occasion” piece following a story line in each of its four movements.
Bolstered by the brass the young orchestra played their hearts out to end the night on a vibrant high note.
