Barry Beaumont, operations general manager at Big Save Furniture, says, “The signage has changed about five times, just to make people aware that yes, they can get down that road. We’re obviously not very happy about it.”
Carpet Court manager Elaine Newsom has been involved with the project from day one.
“It looks like you’re driving onto the site of the indoor stadium, which can be a bit daunting. It would have been nice to have another street that we could’ve used to get here,” she says.
Some businesses say the extended works are “tolerable”, like Carpet Court – whose customers usually call ahead before they visit, but for other the work is a “major inconvenience”.
An assistant at Uncle Bill’s wholesaler says contractor vehicles block up parking space, and light sequencing at the access road is awkward. “Everybody’s fed up with the road works, they’re supposed to be finished by now.”
As Capital Times went to print, contractors Brian Perry Civil, a division of Fletcher Construction, and contract managers Capacity Infrastructure Services were unable to provide comment.
