Flight of the Conchords,
Michael Fowler Centre, June 19, Reviewed by Lynn Freeman

What's not to love? An Oscar winner and a rising Hollywood star on stage together, no pretence, no airs, just two old mates enjoying hanging out together. Their packed-out hometown audience loved them, applauding and cheering from the moment Jemaine and Brett walked on stage in their low budget robot costumes. They are cult heros and unlike so many ‘celebs’ they absolutely deserve the pedestals upon which we have placed them.

There was some new material amidst the old favourites and most of it was right up there. Some of their bitingly clever lyrics were lost, chewed up by the sound system, but most of us know them all. The lads’ considerable charm alone might have made them international stars, but seeing them live reminds us that they are gifted musicians (complemented on stage by fellow multi-instrumentalist Nigel Collins) and jaw-droppingly clever comedians.

Two hours is a long time even for two supremely talented Kiwi heroes and there were lulls, which they managed to turn into a laughing point in their inimitable way as part of their witty repartee. They still manage to crack each other up, which is a delight, and part of their magic.

As part of their Grand Tour they will be performing at the vast Vector Arena in Auckland.  They’ll make it work – the show’s great and the lighting is at times spectacular. But I’m so happy to have seen it here at the MFC. It is an intimate feeling show which works best when you can see their not very hairy chests through their glittery spandex outfits.

Briefs

  • Making housing affordable 27/03/2013 10:06:00 a.m. With home ownership rates falling and many struggling to play higher rental costs, making housing affordable has risen to the top of the political agenda.
Joel Pringle, campaign manager for Australians for Affordable Housing, and Charles Waldegrave, from the Family Centre, will address a meeting as part of a public discussion on housing at Thistle Hall on April 8.
Waldegrave will look at the human faces of housing unaffordability while Pringle will suggest ways to build public support for affordable housing policies in New Zealand.
  • Food to the rescue 27/03/2013 10:06:00 a.m.
Food rescue organisation, Kaibosh, has been named supreme winner at the TrustPower National Community Awards.
The Wellington based service group collaborates with food retailers and producers to rescue surplus food that is good enough to eat, but not good enough to sell, preventing it from being discarded into landfills.
Since its inception in 2008 Kaibosh has rescued over 285,000 meals – that’s 100 tonnes of food redistributed to where it’s needed most.
