Green thumb fun
They’re currently looking for volunteer garden hosts to greet the many people who visit during the cruise ship season, which began when the first ship docked in the harbout last week. All that’s needed is a general knowledge of Wellington and its attractions, and a cheerful, welcoming manner.
“You don’t need to have an in-depth knowledge of plants of gardening but a little will help,” says Botanic Garden Manager David Sole, “We get asked all sorts of questions, from the weather, through to sport and where to find the rose garden.”
A general interest in plants would be good, “Though obviously if you’re an expert and really knew your stuff it would be a bonus,” says Clayton Anderson from Wellington City Council.
Visitors are particularly interested in identifying New Zealand native forest and bird life.
The minimum hosting commitment is three rostered two-and-a-half hour sessions throughout the cruise ship season, November to April, though the keen greenies can do as many shifts as they like.
