Holiday magic
Kids’ favourite Capital E hosts Summer Scorcher – no, that’s not a typo – but a chance to escape the wet and wild Welly winter and enjoy games in a makeshift seaside haven. Play classic seaside games like Wheel of Fortune, Hook-a-Duck, and Beanbag Bull’s-Eye, or relax at the deckchair cinema – playing sunshine-themed films from around the world. All can enjoy ice cream and candy floss, while under 6’s get a chance to make their own beaded, painted or otherwise accessorised t-shirts.
Summer Scorcher, Capital E, July 18 – 30 (except Sundays), $5, under 2 free.
Local libraries have free activites for the whole holidays. Create your own country in Island Bay, hear weird and wacky stories in Ngaio, learn about Brazilian culture in Kilbirnie, and discover all sorts of strange and interesting facts about the world, or break a world record, at Wellington Central.
Carter Obsevatory is going Mars-mad this holidays - you can explore the red planet with their gallery trails, and add your personalized module to the Mars-scape, or even make your very own planet.
The kids night adventures at Zealandia are like nothing else – a 90minute after-dark expedition designed especially for those aged 7-12, but where keen parents are welcome to join, too. From 5:30pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – make sure you book.
See two kids favourites in one go –Fairy Trina and Zappo the clown join forces for a stellar show of magic, storytelling, laughter and song for kids aged two-12. They perform twice daily at 11am and 1pm, at Johnsonville shopping centre from July 18.
Take a trip to Staglands in the Akatarawa Valley, hand the kids a camera, and email their pictures to the Staglands website – you could win an annual pass for the family, which grants unlimited visits for a whole year!
