Hug a tree this week

The new Turere Lodge is in the perfect location to get children out into the bush. Photo: Barry Durrant.
“It’s very accessible and an easy walk to the Lodge, which is very flash. The walk’s not as flat as Lambton Quay but in tramping terms it’s pretty flat,” she laughs, “Then they can stay out overnight easily.”
Experienced tramper Barry Durrant, also a member of the Tramping Club, agrees.
“It’s in a fantastic location with beautiful views up the valley and it’s a great asset to school parties. The Orongorongo River is below; it’s safe and gets warm in summer. Kids will have a lot of fun,” says Durrant.
Conservation Week continues with a beach clean up to rid Wellington’s South Coast of litter. Finally, Otari Wilton’s Bush Reserve has its Open Day with bush walks, talks and skills workshops.
Open Day, Otari Wilton Bush Reserve, 10am-3pm.
South Coast Clean Up, Owhiro Bay to Breaker Bay, 11am-Noon.
Turere Lodge Opening, Orongorongo Valley, Rimutaka Forest Park, Noon.
All September 17.
