Insiders Guide - Naresh Parmar
New Zealand Mustang Convention, TSB Bank Arena, October 20, 10am-4pm.
What’s the story behind your car? Where’d you get it? Why?
Actually, my wife wanted one, but because we had children we couldn’t afford it. Once they left we decided to do what we wanted. We started looking a long time ago in New Zealand and we were going to buy one in Auckland and the day before we were going to fly up he sold it. We were out $500 for the plane tickets! We ended up buying our first one, a 1966 Notch, through Westcoast Classics, Bryce and Lisa Williams, in Tauranga. Mechanically, it’s been absolutely fantastic. I haven’t touched it.
What is it about a Mustang?
It’s a real classic muscle car. I’m a Ford man. If you love Minis, you love Minis. If you like going to the pub and drinking that’s your passion. I like the style and design. I’m taking the ‘67 Fastback to the show because it’s had a total restoration, a ground up rebuild, done by Mustang Restoration in Raumati.
What’s the best Mustang model?
I actually like the ’67-‘68 Fastback. That’s the one Steve McQueen was in.
Are they all imported? How difficult is it to bring them into the country?
They’re all American produced. They’ve got to be 40 years old. You can just buy them and ship them over. You don’t have to get any permit, but there’s a compliance they have to go through. Two of them I bought local. The Fastback has been in New Zealand since 1970. A chap bought it who worked for the New Zealand consulate in San Francisco.
Are they all left-hand drive? Do people ever convert them to right hand drive?
They’re all left hook. Some are converted to right hand drive, but I wouldn’t change it like that. It’s an American icon. Plus, I don’t want to spend $30,000.
Where do you like to drive your Mustang?
I drive it everywhere, but just on the weekends. They’re all V8s and too expensive to run with the cost of petrol. We have a monthly meeting as a club and we usually go to a venue, like a private car museum or a race meeting at Manfeild. Our
territory is Wanganui to Napier to Island Bay.
What’s the coolest thing to do in a Mustang?
Just drive it with a big smile on your face.
