Insiders guide
Best breakfast… Joe’s Garage.
Best place for coffee… I swim with the Capital swim team and not much can top a hot chocolate at Kilbirnie Pool after a fast swimming set.
Insider tip, try… Weta Workshop’s mini museum the Weta Cave, even if you have a phobia of insects. If you’re a tactile person like me, also check out new behind-the-scenes exhibits at Te Papa.
Favourite walk in Wellington… The Southern walkway.
Favourite activity in Wellington… Visiting the zoo. It’s possibly nostalgia from when I went to holiday programmes as a kid… but it’s always changing there.
Best day trip out of Wellington… Blo-karting on an empty beach up Waikanae way then heading over to Kapiti Island.
Curious fact about Wellington… Maori identify the Wellington region as Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui which means The head of Maui’s fish.
Best wet weather activity… A visit to the New Zealand School of Music. Listen to the lunchtime concerts/recital practices/jamming and be transported anywhere on Earth… or even the galaxy.
Best sunny day activity… The waterfront because there’s so much to do… wharf jumping, gelato, kayaks… but I can’t go past friends guiding my driving skills on a crocodile bike…
Best vibe in town… When people get together for major events…The Fanzone and the All Blacks parade were electric.
What I love about my city… Getting to know it. It’s a bit arty, a bit diverse, a bit intellectual. I love that people are happy to take a few minutes to describe what’s going on or help out with the buses and trains – for me it makes the ‘coolest little capital in the world’ that bit cooler.
