Jon’s new band: Too good
“Lucky my friends are all super talented,” Jon laughs.
Toogood quickly left his songs behind, and along with “whoever happened to be there at the time” began to write some new ones. The resulting album was mixed by Tiki Taane – who turned bits and pieces recorded all over the country into a seamless, high fidelity record.
“It could’ve been really fun to do and not much fun to listen to, but there’s some really beautiful music on there,” says Toogood.
The self-titled album debuted at number four last week, and now Toogood, Julia Deans and Shayne Carter will play a stripped back, but still very-much live set in Wellington. Toogood and Deans have been mates a long time. Capital Times took the opportunity to test the much-loved Wellington pair on how well they know each other.
The Adults, The Garden Club, July 23-24.
The questions:
- If she/he was a character in a book, who would she/he be, and why?
- It’s late in the studio and you need to order some kai. What does she/he want?
- If she/he was going to Mars and could only take records from three artists – what would they be?
- What’s she/he scared of?
- What’s her/his pet peeve?
- If she/he weren’t a muso, what would she/he be?
- What’s her favourite Shihad song?/ What’s his favourite Fur Patrol song?

1. Julia: The little red engine that could - for his boundless enthusiasm and infectious positivity.
Jon: Sure. Why not.
2. Julia: Some kind of curry type thing. Usually bordering on uncomfortably hot which he will munch his way through with watering eyes. Or mee goreng (which was this week’s choice).
Jon: Dammit! Yes.
3. Julia: After hours of deliberation, probably something by the Skeptics, Joy Division and David Bowie.
Jon: This is getting ridiculous. Yes!
4. Julia: No-one coming to the shows!
Jon: Don’t tell them that! Correct again.
