Ministry responds
The group took direct action against the Ministry for what it says is its failure to provide safe school environments for queer and transgender students. On Thursday a protest at the Ministry’s head office on Pipitea Street was followed by a march and gathering at Capital E.
Organiser Jason Frisk says the Ministry had taken an interest in the campaign a few days before the demonstration when it made contact with The Queer Avengers looking to discuss some of the demands being raised. He says while the Ministry was keen to talk about issues facing same sex and both sex attracted students, it seemed less willing to talk about issues affecting gender variant and transgender students.
A meeting is planned between The Queer Avengers and Ministry of Education representatives in the next few weeks.
