Moana doodles the future
“I like waking up to the birdsong and it’s nice to go into the forests and hear it too,” she explains, “Some birds are nearly extinct because the Europeans killed them when they arrived in New Zealand, and also because the Maori people use feathers for cloaks. I want more birds in New Zealand.”
Moana, who is half Danish and half from the Cook Islands, went to the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, a place where they’ve “saved the trees for the birds,” she explains. Her proud parents and Moana’s little brother Manu, 7, who was also short listed as a Te Aro school finalist for his doodle, went too.
“Sirocco the kakapo has claws as big as Manu’s hands,” Moana smiles, “He’s put on 500g by eating so many macadamia nuts since he’s been in Wellington.”
The family listens to the birds at their Aro Valley home.
“We have tuis in the garden, kaka, even morepork at night,” says Moana.
Moana’s mum Dorthe Kristensen, a jeweller, says Moana can often be found doing art.
“She listens to pop music and draws for hours with her stationery out in front of her,” she says, “She’s also good at making jewellery in my workroom.”
The prizes are to be announced in the coming days and if Moana wins, her doodle will be on the Google NZ homepage for 24 hours.
Moana hopes her drawing will inspire New Zealanders to save the native birds that keep her happy in Aro Valley.
