Mournful march planned
The shutdown of TVNZ Channel 7 public broadcasting is imminent, but protesters aren’t going down without a funeral.
A protest march/funeral procession complete with coffin and hearse is planned for this Thursday, from Civic Center down Lambton Quay. Organisers of Save TVNZ7 will have a petition with about 33,000 signatures to present to Parliament.
“Wear black if you don’t already,” says Myles Thomas, a campaign organiser.
A meeting will also be held that evening to strategise for a post-TVNZ7 world. “The fight moves to 2014,” says Thomas, who describes the current campaign as “an emergency response, started as a Facebook page and it’s grown enormously, more than we expected. We need to create a formal organisation, more like a ‘Friends of Public Broadcasting’ and take it to 2014 and beyond. This organisation needs to be there to support public television in the future.”
Before the white noise hits on June 30, the campaign anticipates the legal advice of constitutional lawyer, Mai Chen, who is looking at the legality of the government’s decision to de-fund $16 million and TVNZ’s possible complicity.
Funeral march, Civic Square, 12.15pm, June 28.
Organisational meeting for future broadcasting, St John’s Church Conference Centre, 6.30pm, June 28.
