Old shop fronts to stay
The listing means the buildings cannot be demolished or major changes made to their exterior without a resource consent.
The areas are the Aro Street shops, Berhampore, Hataitai Village, Adelaide-Riddiford Street corner, the Newtown shops in Riddiford Street, and Thorndon Village in Tinakori Road. They will join Island Bay shops and several central business and residential heritage areas listed in recent years.
Built environment portfolio leader, Cr Iona Pannett, says these Victorian and Edwardian precincts are an essential part of Wellington’s fabric and the council wanted to ensure they remained part of the city’s collective history.
She says council officers and heritage specialists assessed a number of potential heritage area before selecting these six on the basis of their significance and coherence.
Cr Pannett says the council can help owners of heritage buildings wanting to develop their properties.
“We can provide free conservation advice and technical assistance in order to ensure that development is in keeping with the heritage status of a building.”
She says in certain cases building owners may also be eligible for financial assistance through the council’s heritage incentive fund.
