One year on
What remains of Christchurch’s Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, held to be the finest renaissance style building in New Zealand.
A public service is being held in Wellington’s Cathedral of St Paul at 12.30pm.
The Dean of Wellington Cathedral, The Very Reverend Frank Nelson, says the service is being hosted by the Anglican and Catholic cathedral communities in Wellington, in solidarity with the two iconic Christchurch cathedrals that were destroyed one year ago.
“There will be short prayers and music from the combined choirs of the cathedrals, and Father James Lyons, parish priest of the Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral will speak.”
Nelson says February 22 is also Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.
“Being Ash Wednesday there will be an opportunity for those who wish to receive ashes and for people to light candles in memory of those who died or were injured, and for those who are still struggling.
Nelson says the cathedral bells will toll half muffled as a sign of mourning and respect at 12.15pm.
