Questions on the buses
Tim BrownTHERE is a problem with the supply of power through Manners and Willis Streets and Taranaki Street to Vivian St. This has occurred for some time, and for reasons unknown has compounded recently.
It occurs throughout the day and is proving particularly difficult to identify. The owners of the overhead network, Wellington City Council subsidiary Wellington Cable Car, are working on the problem and its solution, but so far without success. It is possible that the increase in the numbers of buses on Willis and Manners Street (between Mercer and Victoria Streets) with the introduction of the two way flow may have been the catalyst (previously power to buses travelling south into Mercer and Wakefield Streets came from a different source) although the experts don’t think the increased traffic should be the cause.
A technical review group (which involves Wellington Cable Car and NZ Bus) has an overall responsibility for the network and is focusing on options to enhance the supply to this area, but it seems likely to be a few months before an explanation and hence solution is found.
Up to 8am Go Wellington has trolley buses travelling to Kingston Not In Service as the frequency from Kingston is higher than from the railway station. A trolley being a trolley needs to travel the CBD to turnaround at Lambton Quay then back up to Kingston. From 8.30 trolley buses are travelling back to Kilbirnie due to the drop off in services after the morning peak. In the evening trolley buses are travelling back to the Station to pick up on the increase in services.
Previously Go Wellington had the capacity at the station to hold the trolley buses, and the ability to travel Not In Service buses on the outer route via Wakefield, the Quays and Whitmore Street.
