Roti chanai to rule them all

SATAY Kingdom Café, nestled in Left Bank in Cuba Mall, is a not-so-secret feasting haunt that tops the list for its cheap, cheerful food served in generous portions. The service is super fast; meals arrive in five minutes and are hot and tasty. My staple is the unbeatable roti chanai. At $6.50 for a bowl of vegetables, chicken or lamb bathing in flavoursome gravy, it comes with more thick roti than you can eat. There’s a varied menu – starters include dumplings at $6.50 or try a satay burger of chicken, beef or veges with satay sauce for $5.50. A range of Malaysian curries, fried noodles, rice dishes, laksas and noodle soups come in at around $10.
My dining partner Ben Moore and I tried vege spring rolls and chicken wontons ($7), both served with a spicy sauce. Next we both went for the chef’s specials at 10 bucks apiece: I had foil-wrapped, grilled fish cooked with vegetables in a spice-based sambal sauce served with steamed rice; a fresh fillet and filling. Ben reported his chicken rendang – a spicy, dried curry - to have been prepared with just the right amount of coconut.
The tables inside are spread with a range of papers and magazines, or get toasty next to an outdoor heater under the stars during the short wait for your dine in or takeaway meal.
Satay Kingdom, in the heart of Cuba: quick service, large portions, tasty ingredients.
