Sail away for Christmas
Her choice? Goodley bought a boat. The funds didn’t stretch to a pleasure yacht though, so as she’s an art lover – and she describes herself as a ‘spontaneous art buyer’ - she bought a little metal boat that’s designed to be mounted on a wall. It wasn’t just any little metal boat – it was made by the nimble fingers of New Zealand artist Barry Clarke.
Clarke is best known as a jeweller and a designer but his sea-inspired creations have a history of their own. Clarke worked as a seaman in the British merchant navy from 1963 to 1971 before taking up painting at art school in London. In the early 80s he moved to New Zealand and here he has worked fulltime as a jeweller and painter, exhibiting in Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson and Wellington.
“I just loved the way it was done,” Goodley said of the clever vessel made of metal and mounted to allow it to sit out from the wall, “I liked the way it wasn’t perfect.”
Bright and childlike in appearance, it has been a source of pleasure for Goodley, who enjoys collecting “little bits and bobs.”
Another recent art purchase was a piece by Leanne Culy and though she is hard to buy for, Goodley’s two sons did a good job picking out an arty Christmas piece for her last year, the necklace she is wearing, a European piece, purchased here, made of leather cutouts.
Because she doesn’t plan when she’s going to buy art, preferring to pounce on pieces “that are quirky and a bit different” when they catch her eye - Goodley doesn’t have any particular pieces on her Christmas wish list yet.
When she’s putting up the Christmas tree her present from last year will be watching over her - the boat hangs on her living room wall.
