Scottish for the moment
So Sealion is a Scottish boat – for now.
Sealion has been decorated especially for the RWC with flags flying above and new paint on the deckhouse., Skipper Ian McIntosh, Harry’s son in law, says flags are easily changed and the Scottish flag will only be there while Scotland is in the running.
His grand daughter Olive has already brought lots of friends aboard and they’ve painted silver ferns on the deckhouse doors.
McIntosh says he bought the whole range of flags, but only had room to fly nine biggish ones, plus some Silver Ferns and lots of little ones , but says it’s noticeable that the French flag will not unfurl, and hopes that’s an omen.
McIntosh says that with a little help from his friends and as the All Blacks get closer and closer to the finals the little ship and its flags will become blacker and blacker
Curious about why Harry called it the Saltire Cross we investigated; it’s commonly called the Cross of St Andrew, and although it’s said to be the shape of the cross on which St Andrew was crucified, the Middle English and Middle French name comes from the shape of the gates they used to keep their stock from escaping. Presumably cows never thought of hopping over the middle of the x.
