Sex on show
Deirdre TarrantIT has been a feast of dance over the past weeks with contemporary, cultural and late-night adult entertainment all having their focus. On the dark side of the range of how dance reflects our personal lives was In Flagrante. Here were voyeurism, preening, perversion, sex on show and the shady side of women as sex objects.
A series of vignettes were delivered with clinical precision by well toned dancers with bodies to be proud of. An element of humour and lashings of suggestive posing took us through a set of situations in which these beauties with distanced expressions found themselves. Riding whips, leather reins and bits, cooking utensils, a wooden spoon, blond wigs, elastic bondage, a stuffed cobra and even a traffic cop came out in these unfulfilled fetishes that belong to the world of late night European television?
Well rehearsed, these ladies of the night strutted their stuff with purpose but I wanted a bit of buy in from them. Burlesque was a reaction to this sort of night club ‘bimbo’ flaunting availability and In Flagrante felt very much a contrived and constrained realisation of cliché in the sex industry. Somehow we stepped back in time.
There was no programme so I cannot credit the dancers by name but they were strong and totally in on the game. The night I went the audience were strangely silent and a bit more reaction would have set the night club late night scene.
The bar staff were distracting as they ran away along the side of the stage at the start of the show and after interval - serving drinks at the tables and being part of the atmosphere would have worked well and created the sophistication these dancers deserved.
Not for the faint hearted or those who believe that women have found a way out of this type of fantasy. There is a way to go it seems!
