Steal the show
The show tells the story of Willy, a law-abiding citizen, whose life gets turned upside down when he gets caught shoplifting.
Crims was originally performed at the Basement Theatre in Auckland last year. It was so well received, Sainsbury decided to bring the show to Bats theatre in Wellington.
“I’ve always really wanted to perform at Bats, so this is a real treat for me.”
Not only has Sainsbury written the show, he is also one of the main actors.
“I find it easier. Often when you write something, it doesn’t quite turn out how you want it to onstage. If I’m acting as well, it’s easier to spot the flaws in the writing or directing.”
This 28-year-old multi-talented writer and actor has a whopping 26 shows under his belt and has worked with some of New Zealand’s top talents, including Keisha Castle-Hughes, and received critical acclaim for his work on Joseph and Mahina.
He credits his ability to produce so many shows to including the actors in the writing process.
“I write my first draft, and then have the first rehearsal with the actors and go from there. So we’re rehearsing and writing all at the same time which quickens the process.”
Crims, Bats Theatre, February 1-4.
