Still planning at Downstage
Theatre management remains tight lipped over its plans, but Capital Times understands the theatre is currently negotiating with presenting partners for five shows for the year.
The theatre has also brought in an as-yet unnamed design studio to revamp its marketing and promotion.
In another new development, the theatre has brokered backing for the writing of a new script by Wellington husband and wife team Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie, for a production scheduled for 2013.
Chief executive and director Hilary Beaton says the move is part of a new emphasis on new original works.
“If Wellington wants to retain any legitimacy as a cultural capital we must have our own artists producing and presenting new work in the city,” Beaton says.
She says Downstage remained committed to paying professional wages to creative personnel.
Last year Wellington City Council gave the theatre $90,000 to tide it over until the receipt of funding from Creative New Zealand.
The New Zealand International Arts Festival is staging shows at Downstage until March and Beaton says the theatre will continue to offer subsidised venue hire and community access events throughout the year.
