Sunday in Italy
In Italy, each village and town holds annual historical re-enactments and celebrates their culture through street parades, shows and sharing food. Flags have always been a part of these events, used from the time of Babylonia to signify the different military and cultural groups and now cherished in Italy as symbols of historical identity.
At The Italian Festival 2011, Wellington will host Sbandieratori from the city of Faenza in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy. It’s a group with a long flag waving tradition, travelling throughout the world with their shows and winning 30 tournaments in the last 45 years. They will perform on the stadium’s pitch at the Festival, which celebrates the colourful Italian way of life.
