Theatre of choice
It’s interactive theatre and audiences can choose their own cast of six from eight characters, either on-line ahead of time, or by iPhone in the theatre before each show. The choice will be based on character profiles - who they are, where they come from and, in a partnership with leading fashion designers including Madame Hawke, Workshop and Mandatory, what they are wearing. A specially designed website has been created at www.eight-circa.com where audience members can read the character profiles and vote for who they would like to see on their chosen night.
Director Simon Vincent says Eight is about firsts for Circa.
“It’s the first time the outcome of each performance depends solely on the discretion of the audience,” Vincent says. “It’s also the first time Circa has partnered with a group of New Zealand’s leading fashion designers. They’ve chosen a wardrobe that is both faithful to the script and showcases their brands.”
Written by 23 year old English playwright Ella Hickson, Eight is a series of eight monologues with each character offering an off-beat take on growing up in a world where everything has become accessible and acceptable.
“The play gives voice to ‘Generation Y’, the new generation that has grown up in a globalised world. They’re used to greater choice, greater immediacy. For them voting has become a way of life and they’re used to having their voices heard,” Vincent says.
Eight, Circa Theatre, August 6 to September 3.
