THE council has just announced a partnership with St Patrick’s College in Kilbirnie to pay fifty percent of the cost of installing an artificial sportsfield, which will also be available to the public for club matches. This turf (pictured) was also laid this week at Wellington College as part of the council rollout to equip the city with top notch sporting facilities. Council Sports and Events portfolio leader John Morrison says the rollout of artificial sportsfields will change the face of winter sports in Wellington.
“We want more kids, and adults, participating in sport. Sporting activities can carry on year-round without the interruption of wet weather – and they can be used by different codes,” says Cr Morrison.
The next all-weather turfs are likely to be installed at Alex Moore Park in Johnsonville, Tawa, and the western suburbs, possibly at Ian Galloway Park.
