THIS amateur orchestra under professional conductor Kenneth Young tackled a challenging programme with mixed results.
They captured the right sort of sprit, atmosphere and sound for Debussy’s Petite Suite, which they played nicely.
Pianist Emma Sayers is an ideal Mozart player, she has a delicacy and lightness of touch together with powerful muscularity when required. Her musicianship is exemplary and she was clean and sparkling with crisp articulation in his Piano Concerto No. 25 in C Major. It was a delightful performance generally well supported by Young and the orchestra, and as it has no existing cadenza for the soloist, one put together by Young was apt and appropriate.
The Brahms Symphony No. 2 was a bigger ask. The second movement Adagio was nicely played and characterised. The orchestra dug in and did their very best and they played well, within their capabilities, but there were blemishes and less than convincing moments but overall it was still an enjoyable afternoon with Sayers the stand-out of the day
