Wellywood or what?
The five chosen designs from the 350 submissions include the words ‘Te Capital’ painted in a traditional weaving pattern and a sculpture of Wellington’s umbrellas lost in Wellington’s wind. Two designs are of taniwhas representing a local Maori myth about the taniwha who lived in the harbour and the last design is simply the word ‘Wellington’, the final letters blown about by the wind.
The two most popular designs will battle it out against the original ‘Wellywood’ concept in the final round. The competition came about after a fiery public debate ignited over the Wellywood proposal.
