What happened to the rabbit that chased the dog?

Last week’s story about the unlikely friendship between Etienne the rabbit and Maisy the spoodle in Mt Victoria noted that  Etienne had disappeared from his lawn and Maisy was missing him.  Many people have contacted us with sightings. A keen gardener in Hawker Street reported somewhat sadly “I saw him eating my lettuces, but since he ate them all we haven’t seen him and he may have gone elsewhere”.
Another reader said he’d  heard that Etienne was seen way down in the Hood and Caroline St.  area over several days.
We thought eight year old Liardet Anderson who lives in Thorndon might have the answer.  She saw a rabbit which “looked just like Etienne” at the end of Goring St in Thorndon and sat out for an hour with a bowl of food for him, but couldn’t catch him.
But we know.  Dan Friar and some mates were wending their way home from a party when they saw Etienne in the bushes by Chaffers New World.  The team of six had to race about a bit but they caught him and took him down to the Freyberg beach for a look around.  Another late nighter took a look and asked if she could hold him,  and after a long cuddle Dan says she decided the boys were having too much fun to want to look after a lonely rabbit, so she took him to the SPCA, and that’s where he is, and where his much relieved owner is going to pick him up.
