KIWI rieslings are world famous.
One of our most shiny stars comes from Marlborough’s Framingham Estate. Company founder, Rex Brooke-Taylor, was one of the first to plant vines on the rivers bed soils just outside Renwick in 1982. The first riesling under the Framingham label was released in 1994.
Framingham specialises in riesling, producing four very different styles. Their German-style sweet Select Riesling 2007 has made it onto the oenophiles’ dream list in the book 1001 Wines You Must Try Before You Die.
Their high accolades grabbed the attention of a Portugese wine family, who have added the winery to their Sogrape empire.
Great value and readily available, Framingham Classic Riesling 2007 ($20) plucked a gold medal at the Liquorland Top 100, a competition designed to discover the top 100 wines available in commercial quantities in NZ. The Classic has citrus and mineral aromas. The palate is off dry and very pure. The balance between the juicy fruit and gentle acids is spot on.
Wine of the week: Glazebrook Merlot Cabernet 2007 scored a gold at the NZ International Wine Show and is well worth the $20 on special. Out of the Ngatarawa stable, it is quite the opposite of the ethereal riesling. This wine went down a treat with post prandial chocolate cake.
