Mamma Mia! directed by Phyllida Lloyd, TSB Arena, reviewed by Garth Wilshere

EVEN before the performance started there was a palpable buzz with many already humming the well-known tunes on which the show is based.

The Abba songs are cleverly hung on an unlikely Greek Island love story, creating a fun show which provides the opportunity to indulge in colourful seventies costumes, and disco moves from the energetic youthful dancers and singers, aided by the more mature characters reliving highlights from their past.

The two lead female characters Miria Parvin (Sophie) and Jackie Clune (her mother Donna) gave convincing performances as the heart and soul of the piece. An elegant Geraldine Fitzgerald as Donna’s friend Tanya pitched her vocal and comedic performance perfectly to provide a performance highlight in Does your Mother Know? and Rosie (Leigh McDonald) along with Clune and Fitzgerald, morphing into their extravagant alter-egos from the past belted out disco classics.

The dancing and singing by the young cast is well executed with high energy. Even if the choreography is repetitive, the wetsuit and flipper dance by the “boys” was entertaining. The finale was great with everyone in bright 70s costumes and the major older leads in outrageous spangly disco gear.

The band was excellent and the sound mix allowed every word to be heard.

This is a must-see for Abba fans, and is enjoyable for the whole family.

After the show the happy audience’s singing of the tunes was infectious.
