St Excellence

THE Californian-based St Lawrence String quartet brought energy and commitment to its performances with leader Geoff Nuttal – the most physically engaged player.
His violin tone ranges from big and rich to the merest pianissimo with second violin Scott St John, violist Lesley Robertson and cellist Christopher Costanza. They make a formidable musical team.
They opened with stylish playing in the early Haydn work String Quartet in F Op 77 No 2, and moved onto the John Adams String Quartet, which was written for them and first performed in January. It reflects some of Adams’s repetitive minimalist style.
The concept of sharing music with friends came in a gloriously performance of Mendelssohn Octet in E flat for strings Op 20. Joined by the New Zealand String Quartet, the St Lawrence players took the leading parts, demonstrating their excellence.
