IT was meant to be a home-coming NZ tour for The Veils, and on Friday night at The San Francisco Bathhouse it sure felt like it, despite only half of the London-based band possessing New Zealand passports.
The sold-out Wellington crowd sang enthusiastically along with lead man, guitarist and pianist Finn Andrews’ every word, as he performed tracks from The Veils’ latest album Sun Gangs and 2006’s Nux Vomica.
Andrews took the audience on a sonically interesting and rewarding journey, switching smoothly between more serious, lyrically rich ballads, such as his new hit Sit Down By The Fire, to rockier favourites such as Jesus For The Jugular, and back to lighter classics such as Calliope, before treating the packed crowd to a double encore.
Andrews’ final electric solo moment was the highlight and as the talented, hat-clad songwriter wailed “Where I’m going you can’t save me”, he left the stage with a satisfied, somewhat more sedate crowd at his heels.
