Dine in style

WHAT a neat idea to have a traditional restaurant in a mall setting.
Khmer Satay Noodle House in Readings Cinema on Courtenay Place provides a mouth-watering alternative when grabbing a quick bite before a movie.
Nicely tucked at the back of the mall, the restaurant boasts beautiful wooden Malaysian-style seats and big round tables in a dimly lit cosy open-plan room.
We ordered a selection of mini spring rolls and deep-fried wontons with sweet chilli sauce for starters, and they appeared soon after in delicate china plates.
Light and crunchy, the little morsels were a delicious way to start a nice evening.
Sitting in the restaurant and looking at the traditional ornaments it holds, it’s easy to forget that you’re in a mall. And judging by the number of happy-looking diners, Khmer Satay Noodle House isn’t a hidden secret, but a much-loved gem.
I was feeling tantalised by the delicious smell of spices wafting through the air when our mains arrived.
My date and I shared a chicken pad thai and a curry chicken kapitan. The meals were perfectly spicy, and didn’t at all adhere to the “kiwi hot” phenomenon that so many restaurants these days buy into.
Large piece of tender chicken floated in the coconut milk based curry, and I could taste the lemon juice.
A Thai favourite of mine, the pad thai was one of the better I’ve tried, and the noodles were light and fluffy, with delicious fresh vegetables to crunch on, and each mouthful brought a spicy kick.
The best thing about the restaurant is the service. The waitresses greet you with a lovely smile on arrival and departure, and the meals are served to your table soon after you order.
Next time I go to a movie, I’ll skip the greasy mall food, and instead make it the perfect night – starting with Khmer Satay Noodle House.
