Size doesn't matter

2/12/2009 11:23:00 a.m.

A collective of small vineyards has formed an exciting new label, Little Vineyards of Wairarapa, so that we can “taste the true terroir of the Wairarapa” though their selection of single vineyard wines.
We tasted a red and a white from the range, and discovered that size doesn’t matter. When it comes to producing interesting wines, these wee winemakers can compete with the big guys.
Bijou Estate Double Bridges Pinot Gris 2008 won bronze at the Bragato Wine Awards. It’s pretty in the glass, with an apricot blush to the colour. My patience was rewarded as it opened up like a secretary after a couple of wines at a Christmas party to become quite lush. Savoury lees character provides funky interest in terms of flavour and texture.
Lyndor Cab Sav 2006 ($39) is fruity blueberries and plums through and through, but could do with a bit more tannin to compensate for the sweetness. In the end it tasted almost porty. Mind you, I had sampled Te Mata “Awatea” Cabernet/Merlot 2007 ($35) earlier in the evening, which had lovely spicy liquorice undertones.  The Lyndor had stiff competition.
Wine of the Week: Couper’s Shed Pinot Gris 2009 ($15.90) Awarded trophy pinot gris at Air NZ Wine Awards. Easy drinking with gentle acids to balance juicy fig and pear flavours.

WOULD you purchase a house with a carport on encroached land if you knew this meant paying an annual fee based on the land value?
